Leeds United’s back-up strikers are not enough for a promotion push next season.
Following Marcus Antonsson’s arrival at Leeds United from Swedish side Kalmar last week, new Whites manager Garry Monk now has the prospect of pairing the 25-year-old with New Zealand international Chris Wood next season.
That is likely to be the plan, with the former Swansea City boss knowing the importance of goals as he attempts to mount a successful promotion push in his first year at the helm.
But if Wood and Antonsson are to be the first choice strike partnership at Leeds next season, that currently leaves Souleymane Doukara and Lee Erwin as the back-ups, and few Leeds fans would feel confident if the pair needed to step in for any length of time.
Erwin is one for the future and deserves minutes next season, a potential impact sub with the innate ability to be a future fan favourite at Elland Road, while Doukara showed last season – albeit sporadically – that he can play a positive role at the club when given a chance.
But the latter in particular is not the answer for a side fighting to return to the top flight and Monk will know the importance of strength in depth over a long hard season.
For that reason Antonsson is unlikely to be the last striker to arrive at Elland Road this summer.
Erwin could do well as a bit-part player but Leeds still need a better third option for the times when Wood or Antonsson or injured, suspended or simply not doing the business.
But until a deal for another forward is pushed over the line, Doukara and Erwin remain the second line of attack for a side that has been out of the spotlight for way too long.
