The 23-year-old finally opened his account for Leeds United on Saturday.

Kemar Roofe ended a 22-match barren spell to score his first goal for Leeds United in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Elland Road.

The 23-year-old, a £3 million summer signing, broke his duck by opening the scoring on 68 minutes in what was a huge win for Leeds, who move fourth in the Championship as a result of inflicting a first defeat on Villa boss Steve Bruce.

Interestingly, Roofe is no stranger to getting that sort of monkey off his back and United fans will be hoping that history can repeat itself.

It took the young forward nine matches to open his account at previous club Oxford United, and his career at the Kassam Stadium was never the same when he did.

Roofe could not buy a goal for Oxford between the 14th of February 2015 until early April, but a brace in a 3-2 win at Wycombe sparked a huge upturn in fortunes.

He would finish that season by scoring six times and then go on to bag a whopping 26 goals in all competitions last term in a run of form which led to his big-money switch to Leeds under Garry Monk.

Granted, his barren run was longer by 13 matches this time around, but he has been playing Championship football and initially it must have been something of a culture shock having come from League Two.

Still, Roofe – who hit the bar in Tuesday’s League Cup defeat at Liverpool and later berated his “curse” – can now breathe a huge sigh of relief, and Leeds supporters will now be hoping he can kick on massively. History suggests that could be about to happen.
