Could Jason Cummings’s arrival at Ibrox force Alfredo Morelos to get even better for Glasgow Rangers?
Alfredo Morelos was among the goalscorers on Wednesday as Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-0 at Ibrox.
The 21-year-old hitman now has 13 goals in 24 games across all competitions this season and it’s fair to say he’s looking like a very decent return for the £1 million spent on him last summer.
But is the Colombian marksman about to get even better?
Despite enjoying a prolific first season so far, Morelos has had no real competition up until now. There has only been Eduardo Herrera and Kenny Miller, neither of whom were ever going to start ahead of him.
But the arrival of Jason Cummings should give the former HJK Helsinki star something to think about and the Scot could, in theory, give Morelos motivation to reach the next level.
The 22-year-old managed 47 goals in his last two seasons for Hibernian prior to joining Notting Forest last summer and despite impressing in the Championship, few would back against him to prove himself prolific in the top flight – if he gets the chance.
With Graeme Murty continuing with a system that only allows for one central striker, it’s Morelos’s job to ensure that Cummings – signed on a half-season loan – does not get many chances from the start.
And the only way to do that is by scoring goals to make himself undroppable in the eyes of Murty.
