Don Hutchison has backed Newcastle United’s transfer interest in Inter star Nicolo Barella and how he would be willing to ‘pick him up from the airport’ and ‘pay his wages’ in order to get him to St James’ Park.

With Eddie Howe’s side now in the Champions League, fans are waiting for Newcastle United to stick their chest out in the transfer market.

Well, for Hutchison, if they secure the talents of Nicolo Barella, then it would be a ‘statement signing’ from the Magpies, as he told ESPN.

It has been suggested that Newcastle are ‘pushing hard‘ to sign the Italy international in a stunning £50 million swoop, as reported by The Telegraph.

There have been long-winded rumours that James Maddison is another player on the club’s radar, but this possible capture is going to the next level.

And that’s where Newcastle are now, with former Premier League midfielder and Serie A expert Hutchison excited by this Barella news.

“Can I pay his wages,” asked Hutchison in excitement. “Can I pick him up from the airport? What do I do? We get him in!

“That would be a statement signing. Can you imagine a Newcastle midfield of James Maddison, Barella and the quality that they already have got there? Bruno is already in there and Joleinton as well, so you are adding a brilliant player that would go into Newcastle’s XI.

“If they got Nicolo Barella, then my word, that’s a proper signing.”

Newcastle’s midfield next season

The 2023 summer transfer window officially opened on Wednesday and things are now starting to spice up.

A lot of eyes were on Newcastle last summer and the same applies now, with this possible Barella capture elevating Howe’s midfield to even higher levels.

The thought of the Italian star linking up with Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak next season is worth paying a lot of money for, that’s for sure.
