Cody Gakpo is a Liverpool player.

The Reds announced the signing of the Dutch attacker on Wednesday evening, and we may now just be days away from seeing his debut for the Reds.

Indeed, with a game against Brentford on January 2nd on the horizon, it may not be long before we get to see Gakpo in Premier League action.

The former PSV man will be looking to light up the Premier League, but as every Liverpool fan knows, the Reds will want to be competing on all fronts this season.

Luckily, he’ll have a chance to shine in the FA Cup in early January, but many will be wondering if he’ll be able to play in the Reds’ Champions League ties against Real Madrid in early 2023.

Can Cody Gakpo play for Liverpool in the Champions League?

Luckily for the Reds, Gakpo will be able to play in their Champions League games if he is added to their squad.

Unlike English domestic competitions, there’s no way to be cup-tied in the Champions League, so Gakpo’s appearances in the qualifying rounds for PSV won’t make a difference.

The same situation occurred last season when Liverpool signed Luis Diaz from Porto after he’d already played a handful of Champions League games for the Portuguese side.

Diaz, of course, went on to be a key player in that competition for the Reds as Jurgen Klopp’s side reached the final, and Liverpool will be hoping for a similar impact from Gakpo.

Interestingly, Gakpo’s Champions League debut for Liverpool may be against the team that beat them in last year’s final, and it would be very fitting if the Dutch attacker ended up being the difference maker in this tie after signing for the club.
