Manchester United loanee has played just once for Leeds in the Championship this season.
When Cameron Borthwick-Jackson made an unexpected breakthrough into the Manchester United first-team two seasons ago the left-back demonstrated the composure and tenacity to suggest that he could at least enjoy a career at a high level.
Since then, however, matters certainly haven’t gone to plan for the young defender with a miserable loan spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers last season having been followed by a frustrating start to his stint with Leeds United this term.
Borthwick-Jackson has been restricted to just five appearances for Leeds so far this season, with just one of those having come in the Championship.
Injuries have certainly played a part in restricting the 20-year-old’s progress but he has also been left out on several occasions when he has been fit.
Getting into the Leeds team will be a difficult task for Borthwick-Jackson, with Gaetano Berardi established as the first-choice left-back for Thomas Christiansen’s side. Borthwick-Jackson hasn’t made the bench in the Championship since August and is clearly out of favour at present, with his lack of experience and Christiansen’s unwillingness to take a risk perhaps counting heavily against the defender.
However, Leeds have lacked consistency in the league of late and have lost four of their last five games, indicating that it is time for Christiansen to make some alterations to his side, which could include giving Borthwick-Jackson more opportunities.
Borthwick-Jackson is also capable of operating as a centre-back if required but he is much more effective at left-back, where he can push forwards with regularity and supply dangerous crosses.
The prospect definitely deserves an opportunity to showcase his credentials but at present it appears that this could well turn out to be another frustrating and ultimately pointless loan spell for him.
