Everton face West Ham on Wednesday night at Goodison Park.
The Hammers travel north to Merseyside to face Unsworth’s out-of-form Toffees, in what is a battle of two sides falling way below expectation despite optimistic pre-season expectations that should see them both in the top half of the table.
Rooney, 32, was dropped by Unsworth on Sunday afternoon as the Merseyside outfit went up against Southampton on the south coast, and remained an unused substitute despite Everton losing heavily by four goals to one.
The summer signing now will be looking for a return to the starting line-up ahead of Wednesday night’s clash, and former Toffees skipper Campbell is desperate for the retired England international to start.
The five-time Premier League winner has been largely hit and miss for Everton since rejoining the club from Manchester United in the summer, scoring five goals in 19 league and cup appearances.
Wednesday night sees the return of David Moyes to Goodison Park, who is currently in charge of West Ham United. He will be looking to pick up his first three points for the Hammers, at the hands of his former side.
Unsworth will be looking to do the same in order to maintain his slim hope of being handed the Everton job on a permanent basis, after losing five of his seven matches in charge since Ronald Koeman was sacked.
