Kevin Campbell has rubbished suggestions that Everton are involved in a relegation dogfight already this season, despite losing to Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.
The Toffees could not prevent a 2-0 loss against the Foxes thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Demarai Gray in what was Claude Puel’s first match in charge of Leicester, leaving Everton way down in 18th place.
Interim boss David Unsworth was quoted by the Telegraph as saying that Everton are in a relegation battle, after suffering two losses as caretaker boss following the 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in the Carabao Cup last week.
“You have to be honest, we are where we are and if we continue like this then we are [in a relegation battle],” Unsworth said.
Replying to a fan on his personal Twitter account, former Everton captain Campbell dismissed Unsworth’s claim that Everton are in a relegation fight but believes much improvement is needed if they are to claw themselves out of the drop zone.
Everton could have installed Ronald Koeman’s permanent replacement by the time they take to the field again, as they travel to France to face Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night.
