Kevin Campbell has suggested that there’s no reason why Arsenal cannot sign Borussia Dortmund sensation Jude Bellingham.
The 18-year-old is one of Europe’s hottest prospects and keeps going from strength to strength.
He was part of England’s Euro 2020 squad despite his youth and he made his 100th competitive appearance as a football earlier this week in Dortmund’s Champions League win.
Arsenal signed a young midfielder this past summer in the form of Albert Sambi Lokonga but with Thomas Partey being injury prone, and Granit Xhaka being 29, the Gunners are going to need other options in that role in the near future.
And Campbell has said there’s no reason why his former club shouldn’t be in the reckoning.
Asked about Arsenal signing him, he responded on Highbury Squad: “Why not?”
Shortly after, Campbell elaborated: “This young man was at Birmingham, just up the M6. Nobody took the chance and he had to go to Dortmund. If we have to pay the money, and if we want somebody to be in there [midfield] for years to come, we’ve got to pay the money.”
Could Arsenal sign Bellingham?
Well, unfortunately not, no.
You can’t fault Campbell’s optimism but the truth is that he’s a level above the North Londoners.
He has played more Champions League games in his career than the Emirates Stadium club have since 2016 and that right there indicates that Arsenal won’t be in the race.
Even if they could afford his £100 million price-tag [EuroSport], Dortmund to the Gunners is a step down until Mikel Arteta’s side get back into the top four first which, despite some good signs in recent weeks, could still be a while away yet.
