Is Glasgow Rangers boss Mark Warburton going to sign a Premier League champion for the Ibrox club?

Colin Cameron has suggested to The Daily Record that monetary reasons will not be behind Joleon Lescott’s proposed move to Rangers, insisting that there are two much bigger factors for the 34-year-old.

BBC Sport reported on Tuesday that Rangers boss Mark Warburton flew to England to discuss a move to Ibrox with the Aston Villa defender, who has not featured in any of Villa’s three Championship games so far this season.

The Star reported earlier this year that Lescott was on a £45,000-a-week deal with Aston Villa, whom he joined from West Bromwich Albion last summer.

The ex-Everton man swapped the Toffees for mega-rich Manchester City in 2009 and went on to win the Premier League title three years later.

Cameron believes that Lescott has made enough money from football so that financial gain is not his priority in joining Rangers, insisting that Warburton’s ambition, coupled with the Gers’ stature, are bigger reasons for him to sign up with the Scottish giants.

“He wouldn’t be coming up here for the money. He’ll have made plenty with his moves and wages in England, so I’d be amazed if money was a motivation for him any longer,” he told The Daily Record.

“This will be a football decision and the fact that he’s willing to talk to Warburton tells me he’s very interested.

“He’ll have noticed what’s happening at Rangers and will know the size of the club. Let’s face it, if he didn’t fancy it he’d have nipped Rangers’ interest in the bud right away.”

Lescott could become Rangers’ fifth centre-back – and the third to arrive this summer after Matt Crooks and Clint Hill previously joined the Ibrox side.

Aston Villa fans won’t be sad to see Lescott go if the exit materialises. He has been suspect on and off-the-field since joining the Villans, with a perceived lack of care for their relegation last season among the reasons why the West Midlands club might not miss him.
