The former Sheffield United midfielder has agreed a deal with Yorkshire rivals Bradford City.
Bradford City have signed Cameron Hawkes after his departure from Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, the Telegraph & Argus reports.
The teenage midfielder was a second-year scholar at Sheffield United, but has agreed a deal until the end of the 2018-19 season at Bradford, according to BBC West Yorkshire Sport.
Existing Bradford youngsters George Sykes-Kenworthy and Callum Gunner have also signed up at Valley Parade, penning respective two-year and one-year [extension] contracts.
Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus, Greg Abbott – the Bantams’ head of recruitment – explained: “These three deals are all about beginning to look towards next season and putting the plans in place.
“There are two levels of recruitment. You obviously have your first-team level recruitment, which we are on with now at this moment. And then there is recruitment behind that as well. This is where Callum, Cameron and George come in.”
Hawkes, who is still awaiting his senior debut, will link up with four former Sheffield United first team players – Tony McMahon, Matthew Kilgallon, Nicky Law and Dominic Poleon – at Bradford.
The 17-year-old is described by the Blades’ official website as “[a] tough tackling midfielder who can also dictate the play”.
It is not uncommon for clubs to sanction early departures for academy players at this time of year, giving them an extended period in which to secure new employment.
Ninth-placed Bradford will be hoping to accompany Sheffield United in next season’s Championship.
