Sheffield Wednesday find themselves languishing in the bottom-half of the Championship table.

Ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth round replay with Swansea City on Tuesday night, Cameron Dawson has admitted, in comments reported by the Daily Mail, that the Owls cannot relax in the Championship and may be a couple of poor results away from being dragged into a relegation battle.

After two play-off finishes in a row – including one which saw Wednesday reach the play-off final before a Mo Diame stunner broke their hearts – the club find themselves in a much more underwhelming position this term.

Jos Luhukay’s men are currently 17th in the table and just seven points above the bottom three heading into the final 12 games of the campaign – and Dawson conceded that it would be a mistake to suggest that the Owls are safe just yet.

“I’d say right now we’re not directly in a relegation fight, but in this league another couple of (bad) results and we could be right in it,” he said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

“So it’s important to put a few wins on the board in the league and maybe get climbing up that table to distance ourselves from that relegation fight.”

Unfortunately for the Sheffield Wednesday hierarchy, the decision to part company with Carlos Carvalhal – who will be in the opposition dugout tonight – and appoint Luhukay does not appear to have had too much of an immediate impact on the team.

The Owls have won one league game since the 54-year-old arrived at Hillsborough, and the fans would be forgiven for going into the Swans clash feeling extremely deflated having squandered leads and ended up losing in the last two games.

While there may be a small cluster of fans who fear what continued progress in the cup may mean for their league form, it appears that Wednesday have more than enough quality in their squad to keep themselves away from danger – though the injury problems they have had this season are staggering – and giving the cup game their full attention may turn out to be a good way to get some momentum going ahead of the run-in.
