Cameron Carter-Vickers might be willing to leave Tottenham Hotspur if a lack of regular football jeopardises his World Cup 2022 hopes.
On-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers has told TWTD.co.uk that he is devastated by the United States’ failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, but said he is desperate to be present in Qatar for the 2022 edition of the tournament.
The 20-year-old, who has two caps for his country, will not be representing his country in Russia this summer after Bruce Arena’s side finished fifth in the six-team CONCAF group, in which Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama advanced.
A shock 2-1 defeat by Trinidad and Tobago in November put paid to their hopes of qualifying.
And the England-born centre-back said to TWTD.co.uk: “It’s a massive disappointment that the US team didn’t qualify. I wasn’t there for the game when they didn’t qualify and when I checked on the result it was a real blow.
“Everyone who had a part to play in US soccer was down about it and it’s something we need to learn from going forward. We have to make sure it doesn’t happen next time.
“My target is to be part of the US team that bids to qualify for the next World Cup and to be in the squad when they do. I’ll be 24 then and it’s something I want to be a part of, something I’m working towards.”
Tottenham exit possible?
Carter-Vickers, who joined Tottenham back in 2016, has spent the season on loan at Ipswich Town in the Championship, racking up 16 starts for the second-tier side.
But his comments about playing in the next World Cup might indicate that he is willing to leave Spurs if a lack of first-team football in North London threatens his international ambitions.
Under Mauricio Pochettino, the Lilywhites have an abundance of quality centre-back options – young and experienced – and it seems unlikely at the moment that Carter-Vickers is good enough to stake a claim for a senior spot next term.
