Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s loan from Manchester United to Leeds this summer was a questionable move from the off, and so it has turned out to be.

The 20-year-old defender joined the Whites to give Christiansen some much-needed cover on the left side of defence, following the sale of Charlie Taylor who joined Premier League outfit Burnley.

However, scepticism was rife following the season-long loan deal, after Borthwick-Jackson had made just seven appearances with Wolves during 2016-17.

Now, the one-time England Under-20 international is third choice in Thomas Christiansen’s left-back pecking order behind Gaetano Berardi and Vurnon Anita, with fans’ caution seemingly vindicated as the Man United trainee has made just one Championship appearance for Leeds.

But Borthwick-Jackson could now be in line for a recall to Christiansen’s starting eleven on Tuesday night, as Leeds go up against Leicester in the Carabao Cup at the King Power Stadium.

Swiss defender Berardi was sent off during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bristol City after headbutting Robins striker Matty Taylor, and that will leave Christiansen with a decision to make.

Choosing Borthwick-Jackson over Anita could finally give the young Englishman the chance he needs to shine, by helping the Yorkshire giants overcome what is likely to be a strong Leicester side.

If the defender can perform against the Foxes, then he could be given the chance to shine in the Championship over Anita during Berardi’s three-match suspension with Leeds going up against Sheffield United on Friday.
