Speaking on the LadBible YouTube channel, Emile Heskey has been discussing his career and his decision to sign for Liverpool in 2000.
The striker had been shining at Leicester City before making his move to Anfield, and his exploits in the East Midlands garnered a lot of attention.
Of course, Liverpool were keen, but according to Heskey, he could’ve ended up joining Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa or Leeds United at the time.
Heskey could’ve joined Spurs or Leeds
The retired England star spoke about how he almost headed to Leeds, Spurs or Villa.
“The next step was to see if I could do it higher up. Liverpool came in, Spurs, Villa and I think Leeds as well,” Heskey said.
“I got in a bit of trouble there because my agent told the manager that I was going to sign a new contract, but he left straight away after.”
“Being a Liverpool fan and John Barnes was one of my favourite players, I always wanted to play for them, and that was where I wanted to go.”
Difference maker
It sounds strange to say it all these years later, but if Emile Heskey headed to Leeds United perhaps he could’ve been the difference maker for the Whites in an era where they came so close to glory.
A partnership between a prime Mark Viduka and a prime Emile Heskey would’ve been very dangerous, and perhaps he would’ve coped in those big moments better than a young Alan Smith.
It’s hard to say what would have happened, but perhaps Leeds would’ve had a better chance of winning silverware around that time if Heskey was leading the line alongside Viduka.
Unfortunately for Leeds, Heskey ended up at Liverpool and won a treble in his first season while the Whites crashed out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage.
