Matt Macey’s contract at Arsenal runs out next summer and it seems very unlikely that he will be staying with the Premier League powerhouses.
Cambridge United manager Colin Calderwood was left to rue a ‘fantastic’ late save from Matt Macey as the Arsenal goalkeeper saved his side during the EFL Trophy clash on Tuesday night, in quotes reported by Cambridgeshire Live.
The Gunners eventually triumphed on penalties after a bizarre game of the football in front of less than 1,000 fans at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday night.
Tyreece John-Jules scored for the visitors on the hour to cancel out an opener from former Aston Villa forward Harvey Knibbs for 10-man Cambridge as the side from North London struggled against fourth-tire opposition.
It was Arsenal who reached the next round following a dramatic spot-kick shoot-out however – though it could have been oh-so different had highly-rated goalkeeper Macey not come to their rescue with a fabulous save to keep out a Sam Smith volley.
And former Tottenham defender Calderwood couldn’t believe that Macey pulled off such a crucial stop with time ticking down.
“In the end, the goalie has made a fantastic save [to deny Smith] that would have won it for us,” he said.
“I’m disappointed because I thought we grafted really hard and worked hard.”
Macey, at the age of 25, is hardly a budding young talent. But with his contract expiring next summer, performances like this in the EFL Trophy won’t do his chances of finding a new club any harm at all.
