During an exclusive interview with Spanish media outlet AS, Malaga midfielder Ignacio Camacho opened up on his failed deadline day move to West Brom, and explained why he would have chosen the Baggies over a move to Liverpool.

The 26-year-old Spaniard has been at Malaga for five years, and has made 149 league appearances for the La Liga outfit.

The Midlands outfit had a £15 million deal in place to bring Camacho to the Hawthorns on transfer deadline day, but the move subsequently collapsed due to undisclosed circumstances.

The Malaga man sat down for an interview with AS, and explained how he would have been happy to make the move to West Brom, and not just for footballing reasons:

“In the end, a footballer can only be a professional for 10 to 15 years. Then you need to live and have a family. Many people forget this. Of course, there’s an affinity for a club and affection for the people, but that doesn’t put food on the table for you and your children. England has a far superior pulling power. In the end, football is a short-term career, and there are many things we want to live through. Football wise, West Brom was a long term project where they wanted to sign players. To say I would only have gone for the project would be lying to you.”

It seems that football has evolved over the years to where the money that players are offered has a more significant bearing on their choice of club than it had in the past.

Camacho is a fantastic footballer, and would undoubtedly have strengthened the West Brom side, but whether the Baggies fans would have wanted a player motivated so much by money alone is debatable.

Tony Pulis’ men face Tottenham Hotspur at the Hawthorns tomorrow in the Premier League.
