Cam Young holds a great deal of respect for Scottie Scheffler, especially when it comes to the way he carries himself on the course.

It’s remarkable to think that Scheffler is just one year older than Young, given all he’s accomplished in golf already.

Scheffler currently sits at the top of the world rankings, and Young will no doubt be looking to follow in his footsteps.

It’s fair to say that Cam Young is on an impressive trajectory himself, and is very highly-rated amongst his fellow PGA Tour pros.

Still, there’s quite a bit of ground for him to cover before any meaningful comparisons can be made with Scheffler.

The American Ryder Cup player has raised his game to new levels over the last six months. Yet even with his own rapid progress, he still looks up to the world number one’s consistency.

Speaking on the Smylie Show, Young pointed to what he thinks is the key difference.

“I think Scottie Scheffler has something special about the mental side of the game,” Young said.

“Obviously physically as well, but you know, I feel like you can’t perform at that level and execute that highly, no matter what your skill level, unless you are kind of special between the ears.

“So you know he’s someone that I watch, and that’s all it seems like he does to me. “I don’t feel like he’s ever trying to do anything special. I don’t feel like he’s really ever trying to force anything. I just see him step up and try to make a good swing all the time.

Scheffler may not have always looked destined for greatness early on in his career. But Young now sees him as a player who stays mentally locked in better than almost anyone else in golf right now. If Young keeps studying those habits while building on his own strengths, there’s no reason why he can’t push closer toward Scheffler’s level in the future.

Right now, it’s hard to put Young in the same category as Scheffler. The Texan is operating at a different level.

But Young has shown he’s got the skill to reach those kinds of numbers, even if it’ll take time. If he wants to get there, though, he knows his mental approach needs to improve – something he’s openly admitted.

This season should give us a better idea of where he’s headed. Watching him try to close that gap will be one of the more interesting storylines on Tour this year.
