Calvin Miller keen to feature for Celtic next season

Celtic’s Calvin Miller is hoping to feature under Neil Lennon.

Celtic youngster Calvin Miller has told The Herald that he is hoping to play under Neil Lennon next season after a loan stint at Ayr United.

Miller, 21, has come up through the Celtic ranks, but having made just five first-team appearances for the Bhoys, he spent this past season out on loan.

Miller spent the first half of the campaign at Dundee, but when that move was cut short in December, he dropped down to the Scottish Championship with Ayr United.

The Scotland Under-21 international notched one goal in 14 games for Ayr, but now returns to Celtic with his future somewhat unclear.

Now, Miller has admitted that he enjoyed playing so much at Ayr, and believes his versatility – playing at left back, left wing or up front – may help him play next season.

Miller seemingly wants to stay at Parkhead rather than go out on loan again, and believes his fortunes may be bettered by Lennon being appointed as Bhoys manager.

“There was a good bunch of boys at Ayr and I got the chance to play,” said Miller. “I was playing in a different role too which was good. I was playing left-back and left-wing and I also played right-wing and through the middle too and that is kind of what I was before Brendan Rodgers wanted me to play full-back. I enjoyed being higher up the pitch. I am hoping that versatility might help me when I go back although, like everyone, I would happily play anywhere. I made the most of my time with Ayr and it was great to get that experience. It will be the same routine of working hard and seeing if I can impress the manager.”

“Neil actually gave me my non-competitive debut against Galatasaray just a few days after I turned 16. He had taken a load of the development squad out with the first-team to Antalya for a winter training camp and tournament and I got a wee bit of game time. I know Neil and I am delighted that he has got the job because he has a great enthusiasm for the game and I really enjoyed the time I had before when I was working with him,” he added.

It will be interesting to see what Lennon thinks about Miller’s role. Brendan Rodgers converted Miller from an attacker into a left back, which is a position Celtic need help in with Emilio Izaguirre leaving.

That may not be Miller’s best position though, leaving Lennon with an intriguing decision on whether to stick with Rodgers’ plan to turn him into a left back, or use him in his more natural role further forward.
