Celtic angered their fans on Tuesday by announcing Calvin Miller’s extension, but it means nothing.

Calvin Miller of Celtic scores his team's second goal during The Scottish FA Youth Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden Park on April 26, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Celtic announced on Tuesday that Calvin Miller had signed a new contract with the club. The 20-year-old has only managed four Premiership appearances during his two-year spell in and around Celtic’s first team.

The announcement didn’t go down well on Twitter as a number of fans of the Parkhead club expressed their frustration.

But it doesn’t mean much – Brendan Rodgers surely doesn’t rate the youngster based on his recent actions.

The Celtic manager clearly has no immediate plans for the young left-back. If he did, why re-sign Emilio Izaguirre instead of letting Miller play second fiddle to Kieran Tierney?

Is he going to be good enough in the future? He will no doubt improve with experience, but if Miller – who turns 21 in January – is nowhere near the Bhoys’ first XI at the moment then how much is that really going to change in the coming years?

His previous contract ran until next summer, and he has only been given a one-year extension. That’s another suggestion that Rodgers doesn’t expect much out of him in the long term.

It suggests that the extension is merely only to ensure that Celtic get a transfer fee out of him next summer if Miller – linked with a loan move – joins another club and if they want to make it permanent.

But Celtic fans need not feel frustrated. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that his extension doesn’t mean more game time.
