Rangers new boy Calvin Bassey has told The Scottish Sun that he spoke to James Maddison before choosing a move to Ibrox.
The Gers pounced to sign Bassey last month, agreeing to sign him after he chose not to sign a new deal at Leicester City.
The Daily Record claimed that Rangers are paying just £230,000 in compensation to sign Bassey, and two huge clubs were beaten in the race to sign him.
West Ham United and Bayer Leverkusen allegedly wanted to sign Bassey, but he chose to join Rangers instead.
Bassey should now offer great competition for Borna Barisic at left back, and he even scored in a friendly against Hamilton Academical last week.
Now, the 20-year-old full back has admitted that he spoke to Leicester’s big-name playmaker Maddison about a move to Scotland, given that he once spent time on loan at Aberdeen.
Maddison told Bassey to work hard and give his all, predicting that he will fare well in Scotland, with Bassey hoping he is right.
Bassey added that it wasn’t easy to leave Leicester, but he couldn’t turn down Rangers, praising them as a ‘world-famous club’ after picking them over West Ham.
“I spoke to James Maddison about Scottish football as he was with Aberdeen,” said Bassey. “I asked about his experiences up here and he told me to give my all, work hard and do my thing on the training ground and when my chance comes along, then to take it. He thought I could do well, so hopefully he is right.”
“It’s not an easy to make a decision on your future for someone as young as me, but as soon as Rangers came in it was a privilege to join a world-famous club. I took myself out of my comfort zone and moved away from family, but you’ve got to make some sacrifices and that’s one I had to make. I’m just focusing on where I’m at now and will do my ultimate to become as good as I can and fulfil my potential,” he added.
