Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard wants to sign Calvin Bassey from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers in the summer transfer window, according to The Telegraph.
The report has claimed that Villa want a new left-back to provide competition for Lucas Digne, and Rangers youngster Bassey is one of the players Gerrard has reportedly targeted.
Interestingly, Gerrard worked with the 22-year-old, who can operate as a left-back or as a centre-back, when he was the manager of Rangers.
In fact, the Liverpool legend has publicly praised the Nigeria international star in the past.
Gerrard told Rangers’ official website in June 2020: “He’s a strong and dynamic athlete who is very much the modern day full back.
“He will develop further and we are excited to have made another strong addition to our group.
“He’s left-footed, physically powerful and enjoys driving forward and is certainly equipped to thrive in the combative nature of Scottish football.”

Could Calvin Bassey leave Rangers for Aston Villa?
In our opinion, if Aston Villa make a tempting offer, then Rangers could well sell Calvin Bassey, and the Nigerian himself could want to move to Villa Park.
Villa are a big and established club in the Premier League who could be going places under Liverpool legend Gerrard.
Bassey is a regular in the Rangers first team, so it is likely that Villa will have to pay a decent transfer fee as well as make a strong pitch to the 22-year-old
The Nigeria international has given two assists in 26 Scottish Premiership matches this season.
Bassey has also made 11 starts and two substitute appearances in the Europa League for Rangers this season.
