Callum Wilson has spoken highly about ex-Chelsea star Ross Barkley and how he ‘surprised’ him in England training alongside Jude Bellingham.
The Newcastle United striker returned to the England set-up before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a few years without getting picked.
But when he first was part of the England squad, Ross Barkley was still at Chelsea, playing on a regular basis and doing fairly well.
That’s where the now-Luton midfielder impressed the Newcastle man, as he stated that Real Madrid star, Jude Bellingham, holds that light now, as he told The Footballer’s Football Show.
Nobody ever questioned the talent in Barkley’s boots, it was a case of the player lacking football intelligence, having poor decision-making and not being consistent enough in his game.
That’s why the 29-year-old has fallen off since leaving Chelsea in 2022, including an unconvincing spell at Nice last season, and now he is at newly-promoted Luton.

Ross Barkley and Jude Bellingham in England training
“The first time I joined up with camp,’ said Wilson. “One of my first was Ross Barkley, who I was pleasantly surprised by.
“You play against him and things like that. But when you are up close. He was a really good player.
‘Then I turned up at the World Cup squad after a period of time out. I think it was a couple of years and Jude Bellingham was on the scene. Everybody was talking about him.
“Then, when I was up close I was thinking ‘alright, this guy’s alright. He has got a little bit’, then a week goes by, two weeks goes by, the more you train and play with him, and he is getting his confidence up, you think ‘this guy is going to be a player’. We are now seeing the best of Jude and for England recently where he was unplayable. I would say recently Jude and previously Ross (as the one who surprised me).”

Jude Bellingham – one of the world’s best
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. The 20-year-old just can’t stop scoring and proving to be one of the world’s best.
Jude Bellingham already has five La Liga goals to his name, including a stoppage-time winner.
Well, he was at it again on Wednesday, this time against Union Berlin in the Champions League, with his stoppage-time winner helping Carlo Ancelotti’s side to all three points.
