Callum Wilson has admitted to the Super 6 podcast that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips getting an England call-up gives him hope he can break back into the squad.
Wilson has earned four caps for England to date, but has not been in any of Gareth Southgate’s recent squads.
Phillips, meanwhile, has been rewarded for his good form at Leeds.
The defensive midfielder seems to be a real part of Southgate’s thinking now.
And Wilson feels that the fact that Southgate is happy to give chances to players outside of the elite clubs, proves that he still has an opportunity to make it back onto the international stage.
“He’s given players a platform to play on,” the Newcastle United striker said.
“He’s brought in a lot of players that some people would be like ‘oh they’ve been called up, they’ve been called up’. More in the case of younger players who are more unknown who have got an opportunity.
“For any footballer that is great and you see people like Kalvin Phillips getting called up and he’d just come to the Premier League.
“It just showed that if you do well you will get an opportunity. And that gives me hope still. It doesn’t matter if you’re 28, 29.”
Wilson actually may have had a chance of an England call if he could have kept up his good form for Newcastle this season.
However, the rapid striker is currently out with injury, with his chances of going to the European Championships now looking slim.
Phillips is also out injured currently, but the Leeds midfielder is expected to be back in the near future.
