Callum McManaman boasts the stats to back up his claim that he will bring direct running to the West Bromwich Albion ranks.
Callum McManaman has been discussing his move to West Bromwich Albion in the Birmingham Mail and revealed what he hopes to bring to the Baggies squad.
Having been snapped up from Wigan Athletic, the tricky winger is a direct runner that likes to get at full-backs and deliver into the box.
Tony Pulis does not have too many natural wide men on his books, so a deal for McManaman makes sense.
He told the Birmingham Mail: “Albion fans like a good, attacking player who takes players on – that’s exactly the kind of player I think I am. I’m a direct player. I like to take players on – it’s what I enjoy doing.”
The Opta statistics below help to highlight the qualities he possesses, with his game all about getting on the ball and causing problems.
In terms of dribbling ability, his numbers are considerably higher than those he is joining at The Hawthorns – although it must be noted that he has been competing at a Championship level.
| Total Contest | Won Contest | Overrun | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Callum McManaman | 92 | 45 | 25 | 23 | 1,474 |
| Stéphane Sessegnon | 54 | 25 | 16 | 21 | 1,391 |
| Saido Berahino | 34 | 17 | 4 | 22 | 1,653 |
| Chris Brunt | 14 | 10 | 1 | 19 | 1,545 |
| Graham Dorrans | 10 | 8 | 2 | 20 | 1,591 |
| Craig Gardner | 9 | 9 | 1 | 20 | 1,656 |
Is McManaman what West Brom need?
Given that the Baggies have been leaning heavily on Saido Berahino this season when it comes to providing an attacking spark, he will welcome the arrival of someone new to help carry the load.
Pulis now has a number of players at his disposal that are comfortable on the ball, but boast enough physicality in their game to mix it up when required.
That is what he is all about, with the sides he built at Stoke City and Crystal Palace boasting those attributes.
McManaman is another logical piece in the jigsaw, as he also has experience of life in the Premier League from his time with the Latics.
He should have no problem adjusting to new surroundings and will be eager to make his mark as quickly as possible.
The only problem facing Pulis is, who does he leave out to make room for McManaman?
