Callum McGregor says the mood in the Celtic dressing room was a “horrible” one after his side suffered an extra-time defeat to Old Firm rivals Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final – as per the Scottish Daily Express.
Having beaten Rangers 2-1 earlier this month, Celtic would have gone into Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Hampden Park in confident mood. Rangers had their tails up after reaching the Europa League semi-finals.
However, Rangers were forced to play for 120 minutes to beat Braga and had to endure another 120 minutes on Sunday. In the end, Fashion Sakala scored the winner – after Scott Arfield cancelled out Greg Taylor’s opener.
It sees Rangers get back to winning ways against Celtic. Having lost the previous two, the Gers had won six of the seven before that. McGregor shared what it felt like in the Celtic dressing room after the defeat.
“We have to regroup, go again take the disappointment, we accept it. It’s never nice, it feels horrible, I can tell you. In there, everyone was devastated. We have to go again,” McGregor said, as per the Express.
McGregor on Celtic: Could result affect Rangers title chase?
With five league games to play, and another Old Firm derby – this time at Parkhead – there are six points separating the two sides. Rangers still have two legs in the Europa League, and a Scottish Cup final against Hearts.
Celtic will still be very confident that they can win the league, but this result does give Rangers is confidence that they can go to Parkhead and beat Ange Postecoglou’s side. They dominated much of the initial 90 minutes.
Should Rangers beat Celtic and the Hoops drop points elsewhere then perhaps, the Gers could end up winning the title. But an almighty shift would have to occur – and it remains incredibly unlikely.
