Callum McGregor has been linked with a move to the Premier League recently, but he has seemingly suggested that he is staying at Celtic.
Few may have imagined before the campaign began that Celtic fans would be suggesting that keeping Callum McGregor this summer was going to be one of the most important pieces of business that Brendan Rodgers could do. But his form this past season means that Hoops supporters should be very encouraged by his latest comments which have been reported by the Daily Mail.
McGregor has played a vital role for the Bhoys this past season, scoring 12 goals in all competitions, including a stunner in the weekend’s Scottish Cup final, as well as two goals in victories over Rangers and a strike in the narrow defeat to Bayern Munich in October.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, his form has not gone unnoticed with The Scottish Sun reporting at the start of the month that Bournemouth and Watford are interested in making the midfielder the latest player to swap Parkhead for the Premier League.
But when asked about a potential summer exodus at Celtic, McGregor suggested that he could see little reason why anyone would want to leave the club, perhaps hinting that he is planning to stay with the Scottish Premiership champions.
‘I think when you are here and you are winning things, you see the support and you know how massive the club is, that’s a big draw, ” he said, as reported by the Mail. ‘You are not leaving here to go somewhere else. You are winning things, you are successful, you are playing in the Champions League.
‘The magnitude of the club and the support you get, you don’t want to leave here. Days like last Saturday at Hampden shows that this is the best place to be, so, for me, it’s simple.’
McGregor’s challenge now will be to maintain his form from this past season in the years to come. He appears to have stepped up significantly this past year, so it will certainly be a major challenge for the 24-year-old, as well as for Rodgers, to ensure that he is as influential next term.
If he is as impressive, it seems likely that several more top flight sides in England will be keen to test his resolve to stay at Parkhead in future.
