Rangers will play in the Europa League this season, and the Ibrox faithful must be excited at the prospect of the team featuring in Europe again.

Steven Gerrard’s side will take on Spanish club Villarreal, Austrian side Rapid Vienna and Russian outfit Spartak Moscow in the group stage of the Europa League this season.

Ibrox club Rangers will kick off their Europa League campaign this Thursday evening when they lock horns with Villarreal away from home in Spain.

Celtic central midfielder Callum McGregor has given his take on Rangers’ Europa League group-stage draw.

The 25-year-old Scotland international believes that the Gers have a difficult group.

McGregor, who will be aiming to guide Celtic past the group stage of the Europa League this season, has also praised the performance of his Scotland international teammate and Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor during the Old Firm derby earlier this month.

McGregor returned to Rangers in the summer transfer window as a free agent after leaving Hull City in the Championship in England at the end of last season.

“It’s a tough section,” McGregor told The Daily Record. “The standard is high and Rangers have a difficult draw too but we’re looking to do something this season.”

The Celtic midfielder added about the Old Firm derby: “The performance on the day was excellent and if Allan McGregor hadn’t pulled off a string of excellent saves then we’d have beaten them by three or four goals again.”

Tough group for Celtic

Celtic have also been drawn in a tough group in the Europa League and will not find it easy to progress.

Brendan Rodgers’s side will face RB Salzburg, RB Leipzig and Rosenborg in the group stage.
