Fresh comments from Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor suggest he could finish his career at the club, despite significant summer transfer interest, The Scottish Sun report.

The homegrown Hoops favourite extended his contract by a further year earlier this week – a fine reward for a stellar 2019 at Celtic.

However, the realities of modern football make his stay until 2024 far from certain.

Some Celtic fans might note that Kieran Tierney was also on a long-term deal before his high profile move to Arsenal.

McGregor’s latest comments do back up his actions though. When asked whether he could retire after a long career at Celtic, he was clear.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “It’s a real possibility. Obviously, I really value how highly they regard me at the club as well.

“For me, I am certainly looking forward to the next few years. Hopefully, we can extend it even further and I could end up finishing my career at Celtic.

“The club have been great with me. It’s a real massive statement from them and I do feel valued.”

Premier League interest thwarted?

Signing up McGregor to a new long-term deal, making him as happy as his comments above suggest, is an excellent bit of business from a Celtic perspective.

It was only this summer that they were approached by Leicester City for his services (STV), so clearly there is Premier League interest in the player.

Callum McGregor of Celtic is during a training session at Lennoxtown Training Session on October 23, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Whereas before it seemed liked McGregor could be the next big transfer out the door after Tierney, it now seems unlikely he’ll be up for moving anywhere over the next couple of years.

Given that no-one has played more minutes in a Celtic jersey than him over the last two seasons (Transfermarkt), that should be massive for the Hoops in maintaining the success they’ve enjoyed in Scotland.
