Callum McGregor makes prediction about Celtic attacker Mikey Johnston

Celtic playmaker Callum McGregor is backing Mikey Johnston for success.

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has told the Daily Record that he thinks Mikey Johnston will only get better after some tough games.

The Bhoys ended their league campaign on Sunday with a 2-1 home win over Hearts, just days before the two sides meet again in the Scottish Cup final.

Johnston was the hero on Sunday, scoring both goals. His first was a neat finish after a smart one-two with Euan Henderson, and his second was a fine long-range hit after cutting in from the left.

The 20-year-old is now in contention to start the Scottish Cup final, with his brace coming as a much-needed boost having struggled against Rangers in the previous game – much like everybody else in green and white hoops.

Neil Lennon appears to like Johnston a lot, but his poor display against Rangers left some wondering whether his first-team role had come to soon for him.

Now, midfielder McGregor – who also made the step up from the Celtic ranks to the first team – has predicted that Johnson will improve and get ‘a lot better’ in the coming years having been impressed with him.

McGregor noted that Johnston has had ‘a couple of hard games’, but he’s kept going and shown what he’s all about with creativity, effort and goals, praising him for bouncing back – and that’s why he’ll go on to be a very good player.

“Mikey’s had a couple of hard games in his first ones, but he’s gone in and shown what he can do,” said McGregor. “He creates chances, he’s a willing runner and he scores goals as well. He is only going to improve and get a lot better as well,” he added.
