Manchester City host Leicester City in one of the headline games on Boxing Day this year, yet there will already be some controversy surrounding the fixture.

The Premier League have confirmed that Paul Tierney will be on VAR duty just a few days after his officiating in Tottenham’s clash against Liverpool, where the referee was heavily criticised for his performance.

Harry Kane escaped what looked like a certain red card after a nasty challenge on Andy Robertson, whilst the Scottish left-back was dismissed for a wicked lash on Emerson Royal.

Indeed, it was one of the biggest talking points from the fixture as Jurgen Klopp was one of the main people to lead the criticism on Tierney’s performance as per the Daily Mail. And now, the 40-year-old will head up VAR for City’s match against Leicester.

City will no doubt be firing in all cylinders after an impressive run of form in the Premier League, whilst Leicester will be hoping to cause a Christmas shock with a result at the Etihad, something the Foxes accomplished in stunning fashion last season.

However, Tierney’s involvement in the game will be a talking point. And City supporters on social media are already fearing the worst against Leicester following the official’s antics against Liverpool on Sunday.

Whilst Tierney’s record for City matches is fairly impressive, with the 40-year-old yet to send off a player for the Manchester giants and awarding them six penalties in 20 matches, supporters are not confident heading into Leicester.

Indeed, three points will be huge for City as they aim to end 2021 top of the Premier League table, with Liverpool taking on Leeds earlier in the day and Chelsea playing at a resurgent Aston Villa in the 5:30 pm kick-off.

Here’s what some City fans had to say on Twitter about Tierney’s appointment for the Leicester clash…
