Caleb Ekuban has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that he accepts with the sentiments expressed Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani last month.
The Italian businessman launched an attack on the playing staff in mid-March by claiming that they lacked “commitment, passion and spirit”.
At the time, Leeds had only won one of their 13 Championship games in this calendar year, resulting in the bleak prospect of Premier League promotion after it seemed for much of the season that at least a playoff place would have been realistic come May.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side beat Bolton 2-1 at Elland Road on Friday to lighten the mood somewhat, and Ekuban, who opened the scoring for what was his first goal for the Whites, can understand where Radrizzani was coming from with his explosive comments.
“He’s trying to let us know that even if we are better than the other teams, we always have to compete because this league is very tough,” he told The Yorkshire Evening Post.
“If you shut off for one second they can beat you and take the points away. That’s what he’s trying to make us understand more: try not to switch off.”
Leeds had lead the way in the Championship in the opening stages of the season, so you can understand Radrizzani’s frustrations.
The Whites have only managed to win two of their 15 league games in 2018. It is relegation form really, and had they not been so good in the first of the campaign then they would probably be far closer to the bottom three.
Leeds are 19 points clear of the relegation zone in 12th, but nine points adrift of the top six.
