Leeds United signed Caleb Ekuban in the summer transfer window.
Ekuban joined Leeds from Italian club Chievo in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post to be worth £500,000.
The striker arrived at Elland Road with a strong reputation, but the 22-year-old has had injury problems.
The Ghanaian, who has played a total of just 73 minutes of Championship football so far this season (according to WhoScored), is now fully fit.
Ekuban has opened up about his injury problems, and has also stated that he is ready to become the first-choice striker if head coach Thomas Christiansen wants him to.
“I’ve only had really small injuries until now,” Ekuban told The Yorkshire Evening Post. “I’m, let’s say, very lucky. Compared to the others it was tough because it was the first time I’d been out for almost two months.”
“Every player in the team wants to start,” added Ekuban. “Me too. But in Italy they say ‘a team that wins never changes’. We were very good up front (on Sunday). If the gaffer calls me I’m ready but if he doesn’t, I’m also ready.
“We all have the ability to be the first striker for the team. It’s just that we have to reach our top form. In top form, yes I can be (first choice) but it’s the same with Kemar Roofe, Lasogga and Jay-Roy (Grot). That’s good. If you don’t have competition in a team who want to get promoted, it’s difficult to stay at a high level.”
Pierre-Michel Lasogga is the first-choice striker at Leeds at the moment, having joined the Whites on a season-long loan deal from Hamburg in the summer transfer window.
Lasogga was signed as a replacement for Chris Wood, who left for Burnley in the Premier League in the summer, but the striker has lacked consistency in terms of scoring goals.
Ekuban’s determined comments show that Christiansen can rely on him to give his best if he starts matches and plays upfront.
