Roberts has earned a new contract at Newcastle under Rafa Benitez.

Newcastle United winger Cal Roberts has posted his delight on Instagram after penning a new contract at St. James’ Park as he continues to fight for a place in the first team.

Rafa Benitez has reportedly drafted in four young stars into first-team training due to a lack of numbers, with a handful in talks over a move away from St. James’ Park, while Ki Sung-yeung and Aleksandar Mitrovic played at the World Cup.

The Chronicle claims Roberts is one of those four players, along with Sean Longstaff, Victor Fernandez and Jamie Sterry who have all stepped up to give Benitez more options in the first team.

Roberts has seemingly done enough on the Newcastle training ground under the watchful eye of Benitez, with the England Under-20 international being offered a new contract by The Toon – which he confirmed on Instagram.

Roberts decided to stay on Tyneside throughout the 2017-18 campaign after going on loan to Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock during the second half of the 2016-17 season. In Scotland, he made 11 appearances.

Last term, he made nine Premier League 2 appearances under Ben Dawson and scored three goals, but is yet to build on his solitary senior appearance for Newcastle which came way back in 2014-15 in the FA Cup against Leicester City.

But a new contract will certainly remove some of the pressure off of Roberts, who will be looking to show why he deserves to remain in first-team training and indeed be on the place for Newcastle’s upcoming pre-season trip to Ireland.
