After Celtic loss, Caixinha says Rangers are the world’s most successful club.

Rangers supporters could be forgiven for feeling a little depressed after their walloping at the hands of rivals Celtic at the weekend.

A 5-1 defeat on home turf to match the same away scoreline earlier in the season was a humiliation they had not bargained for.

New Gers boss Pedro Caixinha has a big job to do, and sought to remind fans just how big the club is.

Whether he has over exaggerated is up to fans to decide, but there will be a fair few Celtic supporters roaring with laughter.

Speaking after the 5-1 loss at Ibrox, Caixinha told the club’s official website: “I have a message for the fans that they need to be proud about this club.

“It’s the most successful club in the world first of all.

“It’s the only club in the history of football that five years ago it is in the Third Division and now it is fighting for the top positions in the league, and they can trust that this club is going to be big again.”

It is Caixinha’s ‘most successful club in the world’ comment which stands out, and will have fans of the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona scratching their heads.

The Gers do hold a mammoth 54 league titles, which is accurately more than any club in any of the world’s top leagues, but they have never won Europe’s biggest cup competition.

In one sense you can argue it is fair comment from Caixinha, but it is using more than a little poetic license.

Celtic are on 48 league titles, a figure which is growing year by year, and they also have the 1967 European Cup sitting proudly in their trophy cabinet.
