Socceroos striker and Everton legend Tim Cahill discussed his superb volley during Australia’s 3-2 loss to the Netherlands at the World Cup.
Ex-Everton striker Tim Cahill ranked his stunning goal in Australia’s 3-2 loss to the Netherlands as one of the best moments of his career.
Cahill’s left-footed volley tied the game after Arjen Robben had put the Dutch ahead, but the Socceroos were eventually beaten and knocked out of the tournament.
“It most definitely is one of the greatest moments [of his career], maybe top two, top three,” the 34-year-old said. “I feel it would have been capped even more with a draw or win.
“But I’m more proud of the boys, I’m more proud of the team and the boss purely because of the impact we have made on football, and how we can grow and how kids can be inspired in Australia.”
Australia were one of three sides to have been knocked out on Wednesday, along with Cameroon and the defending world champions, Spain.
However, unlike the other two sides the Socceroos can leave Brazil with their heads held high. They were never expected to advance out of the difficult Group B, but they made a good go of it, testing both Chile and the Netherlands in tough games.
Cahill says he will not play against Spain in the final game of the group, and he feels his stunning strike was an appropriate way to end his World Cup career.
“This is my last World Cup. It was an amazing way to go out, it’s what I’ve always dreamed of and I’ll be playing every kick against Spain on the bench, willing the boys on and trying to keep them mentally focused and physically focused.”
“We came here together with the task of doing something special and I want to see it through.”
