The West Ham right-back could get a chance in the FA Cup fixture.
Having missed much of the season so far with a thigh strain, Sam Byram is determined to make up for lost time, and the West Ham United defender could be presented with an opportunity to impress in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round tie away to Wigan Athletic.
Byram featured as a late substitute in the recent games against Shrewsbury Town and Bournemouth, and it may now be deemed that the right-back is ready to start for the first time since recovering from injury.
Although Pablo Zabaleta has still made some impressive interventions at times this season, it is clear that the 33-year-old is no longer able to perform with the same consistency that he did at Manchester City.
In the long term that could present Byram with an opportunity to establish himself as West Ham’s first-choice right-back, although it is clear that the former Leeds United player still has much work to do in order to fulfil that objective.
Byram offers a threat going forwards, but on some occasions this can lead to him neglecting his defensive duties and getting caught out.
The 24-year-old must consistently remain switched on and alert to danger, while he should be more selective with his forward forays.
However, if he impresses against Wigan then Byram can prove to Moyes that he can be a valuable squad option in the remainder of the campaign.
