Alan Hutton has told BT Sport’s coverage of Rangers beating PSV Eindhoven in Wednesday night’s Champions League play-off that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Ibrox side have got to activate the permanent clause to sign Malik Tillman.
Tillman, 20, provided the difference in the Netherlands. Rangers came into the second leg after drawing 2-2 at Ibrox, with the odds stacked firmly against them. PSV were widely expected to get the job done in their own back yard.
However, USA international Tillman had other ideas. In his seventh appearance for Rangers since joining the Gers on a loan-to-buy deal from Bayern Munich, the versatile attacker won the ball back from a PSV goal kick.
He squared to Antonio Colak who swept home to score his fifth goal in eight games. A 1-0 win for Rangers and a priceless goal that sees them return to the Champions League for the first time in 12 years. Tillman, was the star.
Speaking after the match, Rangers icon Hutton has ordered the Gers to strike the permanent clause in his Rangers loan. He explains that given Tillman’s age, he is only going to get better and signing him permanently makes sense.
“Buy him. in such a short space of time, he has shown what he is capable of. he’s only 20, he’s only going to get better with experience. he’s come to Rangers to play at this kind of level and hopefully, he is only going to get better.”
Hutton: Rangers have got to activate Tillman clause
It is unclear how much Tillman’s permanent clause is worth, but Hutton is right. It is an absolute no-brainer to get a deal done as soon as possible, before other, more financially-strong clubs enter the race for the Bayern star.
Tillman has all the attributed to shine for Rangers. Already boasting three goal involvements in seven games, he has the versatility to play anywhere in attack. The technique of a 10, the pace of a winger, the strength of a striker.
He is only going to improve as Hutton states. Regardless of the price in Tillman’s loan, Rangers simply have to sign him from Bayern. For Tillman, a move makes sense too, given the competition for places at Bayern.
