Jose Enrique has shut off claims that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool should sign Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles.

The former Newcastle United and Liverpool left-back was reacting to a fan on Instagram suggesting that the Reds should look to bring the centre-back to Anfield.

The Saudi-led takeover at St James’ Park, added to Eddie Howe’s arrival, has seen Lascelles fall down the pecking order at the club.

The likes of Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Sven Botman have pushed ahead of the 29-year-old.

Come the summer, there will be 12 months left to run on the former Nottingham Forest star’s contract and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he is allowed to find a new club, rather than sign a new contract.

Nonetheless, when Enrique posted about Mason Mount’s Chelsea contract on his IG, a supporter posted in the comments section: “Liverpool should get Lascelles from the Toon, at least he would battle for them.”

To which the former Spain star responded: “Doesn’t even start for Newcastle,” said Enrique. “How is he going to start for LFC? Good player but doesn’t improve what we have.”

ARE LIVERPOOL AND NEWCASTLE SWAPPING PLACES?

When the new ownership came into Newcastle, it was expected that the club was going to move forward. But at what pace?

Some felt that it would take quite a while to surge forward or get near the top, whilst others thought it might be quicker than most think.

Well, fast forward to the present, and not only could the Magpies secure Champions League football, but they should finish above Liverpool this season.
