Burton Albion midfielder Jackson Irvine has told the club’s official website that the philosophy of the team will not change following their first ever win the second tier of English football on Tuesday.

The Brewers ran out 3-1 winners over last season’s play-off finalists Sheffield Wednesday at the Pirelli Stadium, with Irvine himself getting on the scoresheet just before half-time.

The result comes after Albion were condemned to close defeats to Nottingham Forest and Bristol City in their opening two games, but Irvine, who is the club’s record signing, insists he was not surprised to see his team eventually break their duck.

The Australian international told the club’s official website: “We felt that the luck would turn, you can’t keep playing as well as we are and keep losing or dropping points, we knew that if we kept the consistency of performances then the results would come and that is exactly what happened.

“I don’t think we played any better or worse than we have before but we just needed that little bit of luck, that little bit of being clinical in front of goal, their goalkeeper has had to make an unbelievable save from Tom Naylor and there were numerous other chances, we probably had the cutting edge and it made the difference.”

Burton travel to former Premier League champions Blackburn Rovers this weekend, with Owen Coyle’s men suffering heavy defeats in their opening two games.

But while the Brewers may fancy their chances at Ewood Park, Irvine says they will not be taking anything for granted.

He added: “If anything it (Blackburn’s poor start) means you need to be more aware they’re probably feeling the same way that we felt tonight, that they aren’t where they think they should be so that just makes them even more dangerous.”
