The Burnley goalkeeper would be a good fit for Leeds United, in Couzens’ eyes.

Tom Heaton of Burnley FC looks on from the bench during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Burnley FC at Etihad Stadium on October 20, 2018 in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Tom Heaton could be interested in joining Leeds United, according to the former Whites midfielder, Andy Couzens.

Heaton, the Burnley goalkeeper, got injured at the start of the season and lost his place to Joe Hart in the meantime.

And with Nick Pope – who beat both players to a place in England’s 2018 World Cup squad, also on Burnley’s books – there has been talk of Heaton leaving Turf Moor in the January transfer window.

Leeds, meanwhile, are down to just one senior goalkeeper after Jamal Blackman suffered a broken tibia last week, and a new one is thought to be a priority this winter.

Speaking to Proper Sport’s Talking Shutt podcast on Wednesday, Couzens suggested a move to Elland Road is possible for Heaton, despite his suspected high wages.

“You look at him and he’s most likely third choice at the minute, at Burnley. He’s not playing and he needs to play games. He’d be a great signing,” said the 43-year-old, who went on to praise the current Leeds number one, Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

“I think that an international goalkeeper would be good to come in and push Peacock-Farrell and him in particular would be fantastic – he went to the World Cup (edit – he was in fact only named on England’s stand-by list), but then he got injured after that.

“Obviously, Joe Hart’s come in, they’ve got Pope there as well, so if he’s third on the pecking list he might want to get out and play some games.

“(Maybe) he sees what’s happening at Leeds United at the minute and he wants to be involved in it, which is a really good position for Leeds United to be in – to be able to say these players potentially could be interested in coming to Leeds because we could be onto something very, very big this year.”

Burnley’s Heaton, or someone else? Who should Leeds sign as Blackman’s replacement?
