Burnley’s James Tarkowski comments on England snub

Gareth Southgate overlooked James Tarkowski again for England’s upcoming games against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

James Tarkowski spoke to the Daily Mail about his disappointment over not making the cut in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euro qualifier games later this week.

The 26-year-old Burnley man only has two caps for the Three Lions and has been overlooked since playing the whole game against Switzerland back in September last year. Tarkowski has been in fine form since the back end of last season and his performances have helped the Clarets to seventh in the league table this season.

His exclusion has given a chance to Chelsea’s young Fikayo Tomori who will join Michael Keane, Tyrone Mings, Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez for the games against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria this week. Tarkowski admitted that he was disappointed over Southgate’s decision to overlook him yet again but claimed that he won’t dwell on it

He said: “I am disappointed. I want to be involved.

“I feel like I’m playing really well, I’m at full fitness levels, playing every minute possible in games and I feel like I’m performing the best I have done for Burnley.

“But it’s the England manager’s decision to pick the players he feels suits his system so I’m not going to cry about it and get all upset. I’m just going to crack on with my game and enjoy myself when I’m playing.”

Tarkowski has every reason to feel hard done by especially with how poor Michael Keane has been for Everton. The Toffees man has played every minute of the season so far and he, along with Yerry Mina, has kept just two clean sheets in eight games.

Joe Gomez, on the other hand, has played just 90 minutes in the Premier League all season. The Liverpool youngster is undoubtedly a huge prospect for the future but he hasn’t been anywhere near as good as Tarkowski since the turn of the year.
