Newcastle United deservedly beat Premier League rivals Burnley at St James’ Park on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff.

Jack Cork has admitted that Burnley struggled to open up Newcastle United’s well-organised defence during their tepid 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Tuesday night, speaking to the Burnley Express.

The Magpies were by far the better team on Tyneside, cruising to a comfortable win thanks to a stunning Fabian Schar goal and a first Premier League strike from the rising star Sean Longstaff.

Burnley failed to muster a response in a below-par second half, meaning their eight game win-less run came to an end.

And midfielder Cork has credited a solid defensive performance from the home side, who lined up with Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and the impressive Schar in a back three.

“They dropped quite deep and we found the balls up to the front two quite hard to play,” said the former Southampton midfielder.

“We ran out of ideas, we weren’t as good on the ball as we have been, we were sloppy with our passing and we weren’t as on it as Newcastle were. I think they deserved the win in the end.”

Burnley went into the game with Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood in top form, the two target men scoring a goal apiece in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

But they were marshalled superbly by a Newcastle defence who gave Rafa Benitez’s side the platform for their first league double over Burnley since 1955.
