Burnley’s George Boyd would be a typical Sheffield Wednesday recruit; are Owls one of Championship’s interested parties?

Several unnamed clubs said to be chasing the Burnley playmaker – might Sheffield Wednesday be one of them?

According to the Daily Mail, Burnley’s George Boyd is being tracked by a host of Premier League and Championship clubs, having yet to be offered a new deal at Turf Moor.

Boyd’s deal expires at the end of the campaign, and with the playmaker not yet offered a new one, it would be little surprise if Sheffield Wednesday are one of those interested parties.

The Owls have already signed Barnsley striker Sam Winnall and launched a bid for teammate Conor Hourihane, both of whom entered the final six months of their deals this month.

And having added the likes of Almen Abdi, David Jones (Boyd’s old Burnley colleague) and Gary Hooper within the last 12 months, it is clear the Hillsborough side possess a liking for those with recent promotions on their CVs.

Whether they’d be able to add another one in Boyd remains to be seen. It would almost certainly be difficult now – with the 31-year-old a regular in a Clarets side currently residing in the Premier League’s upper half, not to mention the reported keenness of other top flight clubs. And even a summer move might be difficult, unless, of course Wednesday are promoted.

It’s hard to imagine, whatever division they’re in, that the Owls wouldn’t at least explore the possibility, however, and with their wage bill now among the most lavish in the second tier, a move for Boyd is perhaps not as out there as it seems.
