Burnley have reportedly already had a bid rejected for the West Bromwich Albion forward.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Burnley have had a £16 million bid for West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez rejected, with the Baggies holding out for closer to £20 million, but the Clarets would surely be mad to spend such money on a striker with such an underwhelming goalscoring record.
Sean Dyche’s side were mightily impressive last season, ending up in seventh position in the Premier League table, but one area where they certainly need to improve is their play in the final third.
Only five clubs scored fewer goals than Burnley in the top flight last term, so the addition of a clinical striker will surely feature highly on Dyche’s wish-list, but Rodriguez surely is not the man for the job.
The 29-year-old joined West Brom from Southampton in the summer of 2017, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £12 million, but he struggled to establish himself at the Hawthorns, scoring just seven goals in 37 appearances in all competitions.
His career record makes for pretty grim reading too, with just 91 goals scored in 313 appearances.
Rodriguez is a decent target man, but Burnley already have that option in the form of Chris Wood, and it could be argued that the Baggies forward would bring nothing new to Sean Dyche’s setup at Turf Moor.
The Clarets boss would be better served in focusing his attention on someone with more of a proven track record in front of goal, and if that means spending more than £20 million, so be it.
