Burnley will sign Fahd Moufi – a player Celtic wanted in 2015 – at the end of the season when his contract with Portimonense expires.

What’s the story?

Well, Vincent Kompany has won the race for the defender’s signature – according to O Jogo in Portugal.

The Portuguese news outlet believe Burnley will sign Moufi on a free transfer this summer, with their status as the Championship frontrunners convincing him to join.

Interestingly, Celtic wanted to sign the 26-year-old back in 2015 when he was an exciting young prospect at Lyon, which speaks volumes about his pedigree.

According to journalist Zach Lowy, Moufi has been one of the most consistent right-backs in Portugal for “quite some time” and thoroughly deserves his move to Burnley.

So far this season, the Morocco Under-23 international, who was born in France, has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Portimonense, providing one assist while also receiving two red cards.

Unfortunately, Moufi missed out on a place in Morocco’s stunning World Cup campaign as Walid Regragui’s coaching saw them become the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final.

Burnley signing Moufi could cause an upset

It will be interesting to see who Kompany chooses at right-back next season when Moufi arrives.

So far this term, Connor Roberts has performed brilliantly in that position for the Clarets, scoring two goals while also providing three assists in 23 Championship appearances.

Kompany also has Vitinho in his right-back department, so the Belgian will have to upset somebody if he chooses to make Moufi his No.1 option on the right of defence.

Whatever happens, it is a nice selection headache for Kompany to have – he would surely prefer this as opposed to not having enough options.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Burnley could even officially announce the pre-contract agreement this month.
