A new report has claimed that Burnley are interested in a transfer for Matt Doherty in the summer.

The 31-year-old has had a torrid time out in the Spanish capital, playing a mere 12 minutes since being unintentionally released by Tottenham Hotspur.

With Matt Doherty not getting much game time at Atletico Madrid, Burnley are seemingly keen on getting a transfer over a line.

Burnley eyeing Matt Doherty transfer ahead of next season

Many expected the Irish international to prove his worth under Diego Simeone’s guidance and evolve into the best version of himself, much like Kieran Trippier.

After all, the Newcastle United captain took a huge leap defensively, won a La Liga title and reached levels that were not expected of him during his time in the Premier League.

As that has not been the case for Matt Doherty in an Atletico Madrid shirt, 90 Min have made a claim that Burnley are indeed interested in a transfer involving the right wing-back.

However, fellow Championship side Sheffield United are thought to be tempted by a switch as well, while it was reported that the same can be said about Wolves and Crystal Palace.

Funnily enough, Vincent Kompany played against the ageing defender, as Manchester City drew 1-1 to Wolves during the 2018/2019 season, as one can see on the Premier League’s official website.

The Burnley boss may have the best chance of reuniting with Matt Doherty as they are clearly the transfer favourites to sign him.

Unlike the days where Sean Dyche’s dour brand of football meant the Clarets were widely deemed as an uninspiring side to watch, they are one of the most attractive teams to watch in English football.

Considering the club’s project is clearly on the rise, backed by one of the best up-and-coming managers in Europe, the ex-Spurs defender may fancy a move to Turf Moor next season.
