Burnley will soon have a selection dilemma regarding their goalkeepers.
Burnley’s defence has received a significant amount of praise this season but goalkeeper Nick Pope also deserves much recognition.
After first-choice shot-stopper Tom Heaton suffered a shoulder injury in September, Pope has stepped in to produce some excellent performances for Sean Dyche’s side.
Pope hadn’t played in the Premier League prior to this season but he has adapted rather well to the intensity of the division and has made some excellent saves.
Burnley are currently in seventh place in the Premier League table, with Pope having kept ten clean sheets in 19 top flight appearances.
As reported by Premier Injuries, Heaton is closing in on a return to action and could be available again by the end of the month, which would leave Dyche with a considerably difficult selection decision.
Prior to his injury, Heaton had been rather impressive for Burnley and was frequently called up to the England squad, but Pope has caught the eye to such an extent that dropping him would seem rather harsh.
Perhaps the best option would be to persist with Pope for now, playing Heaton in FA Cup games if Burnley enjoy a lengthy run in that competition.
The battle between the pair to be number one will certainly be intriguing, but it seems that Pope should be persisted with for now.
