Elland Road hosted the PDL game between the Whites and the Clarets which finished as a draw.
Following their 1-1 draw with Leeds United Under-23s at Elland Road, Burnley U23s midfielder Josh Benson praised his team for coming from behind to claim a point against a “good side” in front of a “good crowd” (official BFC website).
The Whites took the lead in the 24th minute at Elland Road as Liam McCarron whipped in a ball for Ryan Edmondson, who connected perfectly and glanced a header into the bottom right hand corner of the opposition net.
The visitors set about trying to draw level as they finished the first half strongly and, not long after the restart, Ali Koiki hit the crossbar, before Scott Wilson’s close range header was saved by Illan Meslier.
In the end, the Professional Development League points were split as Pascal Strujik fouled Lewis Richardson in the box just after the hour mark and Benson converted the resulting penalty past Meslier for a 1-1 draw.
“It was about time I scored, I’m really happy”, Benson, 19, told the Burnley website following his first goal of the season. “Leeds are a good side; I thought the boys played really well tonight against a really experienced Leeds side.
“The boys dug deep to claw a goal back and we could have gone onto win it late on, so we deserved the point. But I thought we were excellent all over the park and we done well to keep the unbeaten run going at Elland Road in front of a good crowd.”
Benson also spoke of how the home crowd tried their best to put him off when he got to the spot for his penalty, adding: “When I was stepping up the crowd were shouting and trying to put me off and stuff, but I just did my best to shut it out and try focus on scoring.”
The Lancastrians are back in action next Monday when they host Sheffield Wednesday U23s.
