Is ‘spent’ the right word? ‘Wasted’ may be a more appropriate description.
Because, despite the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Lucas Tousart, Dodi Lukebakio and Krzysztof Piatek, Hertha spent much of last season flirting with the relegation zone. They only survived after the return of former coach Pal Dardai during the second half of a torturous campaign.
So Hertha supporters could be forgiven for greeting the potential arrival of Ivory Coast international Maxwel Cornet with scepticism, especially when you consider Piatek and co failed to live up to lofty expectations at the Olympiastadion.

L’Equipe reports the versatile Lyon man will choose Hertha Berlin over Burnley.
Sean Dyche’s side have approached the Ligue 1 giants to enquire about Cornet’s availability and it is understood they would have no problems paying the £11 million transfer fee.
It seems Burnley’s rather homely reputation could count against them, however, with Cornet set to turn down a move to Turf Moor in favour of a club that talks a good game but has yet to turn its enviable funds into a competitive Bundesliga outfit.
Leeds United have also been linked with Cornet, a player who burst on to the scene as a winger before adapting to a new-look left-back role last season.
Since signing Junior Firpo from Barcelona instead, however, the Cornet trail appears to have grown cold at Elland Road.
